What Is Metal Deburring?

What Is Sheet Metal Edge Rounding?
Sheet metal edge rounding changes the edge geometry by creating a smoother radius. It goes beyond simply removing a burr and is often required when a part needs safer handling, more consistent coating coverage, a smoother touch or a specified rounded-edge result.
On Qintellim machines, S identifies an edge-rounding station, and the rotary roller brush is the tooling used by that station. The brush can treat suitable, accessible external contours, holes and slots when the workpiece can be conveyed securely.
The S station creates edge rounding or radius rounding. It does not cut a defined bevel and should not be described as a true chamfering process.

When Is Deburring Alone Enough?
Deburring may be sufficient when the main defect is a burr or raised material and the drawing or downstream process does not require a defined radius. This is common for suitable internal parts, utility components and workpieces where the primary target is burr removal rather than a rounded-edge profile.
The burr direction, height, attachment, material, part geometry and required surface result should still be checked by sample testing before the sanding-belt sequence is confirmed.
When Is Edge Rounding Required?
Edge rounding is relevant when the buyer requires safer handling, smoother edges, improved coating preparation, more consistent appearance or a specified edge radius. It is commonly considered for suitable laser-cut or punched parts before powder coating, painting, assembly, packaging or frequent manual handling.

If the incoming part has a significant burr, the burr normally needs to be removed before the final rounded-edge result is evaluated. An S station is not a substitute for every primary deburring requirement.
When Should Deburring and Edge Rounding Be Combined?
A combined R/S process is appropriate when the same part needs sanding-belt deburring and rotary roller brush edge rounding. Qintellim RS-Series configurations can use different station routes according to the sample result:
- RS: one R deburring stage followed by one S edge-rounding stage.
- RRS: two R stages followed by one S stage.
- RSR: an R-S-R route with a second controlled sanding-belt step after edge rounding when the process requires it.
RRS and RSR contain the same number of R and S stations but use different station sequences. The final route, tooling and settings are confirmed from sample testing and the approved technical proposal.

Is edge rounding the same as chamfering?
No. Chamfering normally creates a defined angled edge. Edge rounding creates a radius. Qintellim S stations use rotary roller brush tooling for edge rounding, not for cutting a defined bevel.
Does an edge rounding machine also remove burrs?
An S station may treat suitable light edge conditions, but it should not be assumed to replace primary sanding-belt deburring. If significant burr removal and radius edge rounding are both required, evaluate an RS-Series configuration.
Which process normally comes first?
When a workpiece has burrs and also needs a rounded edge, an R deburring stage commonly precedes an S edge-rounding stage. Alternative R/S routes are available when sample testing shows that another sequence is more suitable.
