Before powder coating, a sheet metal part may need deburring, edge rounding, or both. Deburring removes raised burrs and suitable residue, while edge rounding creates a smoother radius on accessible edges. The required result should come from the part drawing, coating specification and downstream inspection criteria, then be confirmed by sample testing.

Edge rounding can create a more consistent edge geometry for handling and coating preparation. The resulting edge condition should be evaluated together with cleaning, chemical pretreatment, grounding, coating application, curing and final coating inspection.

Why Check the Edge Before Powder Coating?

Laser-cut, punched, stamped and sheared parts can leave different edge conditions. One part may have a raised burr. Another may be burr-free but still have a sharp edge. A third may have heavy slag or a surface condition that requires a different first process.

Sharp or inconsistent edges can be more difficult to coat uniformly than broad flat surfaces. The practical goal of edge preparation is therefore not to claim a universal coating result, but to present the coating process with the edge condition required by the buyer's drawing or quality specification.

What Does an S Edge-Rounding Station Do?

On Qintellim machines, S identifies an edge-rounding station. The station uses rotary roller brush tooling to create a smoother radius on suitable external contours and accessible holes, slots or internal features. It is an edge-rounding process, not a true chamfering process that cuts a defined bevel.

An S station should not automatically be used as a substitute for significant primary burr removal. When the incoming part has raised burrs and the final part also needs a rounded edge, an RS-Series route combines R sanding-belt deburring with S rotary roller brush edge rounding.

S-Series or RS-Series for Coating Preparation?

S-Series: Edge Rounding Is the Main Requirement

Evaluate an S-Series sheet metal edge rounding machine when suitable parts already have a controlled incoming surface and the primary requirement is a smoother radius on accessible edges.

RS-Series: Burr Removal and Edge Rounding Are Both Required

Evaluate an RS-Series deburring and edge rounding machine when the part needs sanding-belt burr removal before or around the rotary roller brush stage.

Working Width and Conveyor Platform Still Matter

Qintellim S- and RS-Series projects can be evaluated in 450, 630, 800, 1000, 1300 or 1600 mm working widths. Every width is project-based and should be selected from the maximum part dimension across the conveyor, part orientation, edge access and required throughput.

  • A: vacuum adsorption for suitable non-magnetic parts, small workpieces or thin sheets after holding tests.
  • M: magnetic adsorption for suitable ferromagnetic steel workpieces.
  • A-M: a half-magnetic, half-vacuum combined platform for mixed-material or changing workpiece requirements.

Openings, contact area, flatness, part rigidity and process load must be reviewed before the conveyor platform is approved.

What Should a Sample Test Verify?

A useful sample test should represent actual production, not only a clean flat coupon. Send the following information with the parts:

  • Material grade, magnetic response and thickness range
  • Cutting or forming process and incoming burr photos from both sides
  • Minimum and maximum part dimensions, openings, holes and slots
  • Required edge radius, edge feel or drawing requirement
  • Powder coating system, pretreatment route and coating-related acceptance criteria
  • Visible surfaces, areas that must not be over-ground and dimensional restrictions
  • Parts per shift, loading direction and part orientation
  • Local dust-control and workshop safety requirements

After mechanical edge preparation, the buyer's coating team can evaluate the complete route, including cleaning, pretreatment, grounding, coating coverage, appearance and curing, against the project specification. Does every powder-coated sheet metal part need edge rounding?

No. The required edge condition depends on the drawing, coating specification, part use and inspection criteria. Some parts only need burr removal, while others require a defined rounded-edge result.

Can an S station remove a large burr?

An S station is designed for edge rounding with rotary roller brush tooling. Significant primary burr removal normally requires an R sanding-belt station, and heavy slag requires a C function before finer processing.

What edge radius should be specified?

There is no single Qintellim series-wide radius value. Use the part drawing or coating requirement, then confirm the achievable result from the material, geometry, brush tooling, process settings and sample test.

Can the rotary roller brush reach holes and slots?

It can treat suitable accessible features when the brush can reach the edge and the workpiece remains stable on the conveyor. Drawings and representative samples are required for difficult geometry.
